New Bern Historical Society
NEW BERN HISTORICAL SOCIETY FOUNDATION INC

Founded in 1923 by a group of Craven County citizens, without the aid of grants or public funds, the New Bern Historical Society is a private, non-profit membership organization with an IRS 501(c)3 tax-exempt classification.

Governance is by a 23 member Board of Directors.  Directors are elected by the membership and serve a three-year staggered term; one-third of the Board is elected annually.  Membership is approximately 800.

The Mission of the New Bern Historical Society is to preserve and promote the social, cultural, and architectural heritage of New Bern and Craven County.

The Administrative Office of the Society is located in the Roberts House (ca. 1908), 512 Pollock Street, New Bern.  Office hours are 9:00 to 4:30, Monday through Friday.

Staff includes a full time executive director and an administrative assistant.  Dozens of volunteers work regularly at scheduled times each month.

Properties:  The Historical Society owns and operates the Attmore-Oliver House, located at 511 Broad Street, with an entrance at 510 Pollock Street.  The Attmore-Oliver House was built in 1790 and significantly enlarged in 1834.  It has been restored and is presented to the public as a Civil War House Museum, featuring period furnishings, family artifacts, Civil War memorabilia and a unique doll collection.  It is open for tours from May through October, and is available for rent throughout the year for weddings, receptions, and business meetings.

The Historical Society also owns a Civil War Battlefield site.  Located 5 miles east of the city, at the entrance to Taberna, this 26 acre property was the site of the 1862 Battle of New Bern.  It is currently being developed as the New Bern Battlefield Park, and is expected to be open to the public by the end of 2007.  The Park will include trails, bridges, informational signs, monuments, a visitor’s pavilion, a living history demonstration area, and public parking.

Income is derived from several sources.  These include general membership dues, business memberships, occasional gifts/donations, museum tour fees, rentals of the Attmore-Oliver House, and sales from a small retail shop.  Special fundraising events, which provide the majority of operational revenues, include the annual Attic-Basement-Closet Yard Sale, the Spring Historic Homes and Gardens Tour, and New Bern at Night Ghost Walk.  The latter two events combined bring nearly 5,000 visitors to New Bern each year.

Educational Programs are presented throughout the year, both for children and adults.  An evening program series, open to the public at no charge, provides an opportunity to present historical topics of local and regional interest.  A new Lunch and Learn series, to be held at a local restaurant, will feature Dick Lore, historian of the Historical Society and local humorist.  The Junior Docent Program, designed for fourth and fifth grade students, provides an opportunity for school children to learn the history of the Attmore-Oliver House and give tours in period dress.  Additionally, the annual Civil War Adventure Day for Children (6 to 12 years of age) is a very popular living history event held at the Battlefield Park and includes three Civil War re-enactment groups.

Publications include the semi annual Journal of the New Bern Historical Society, which is mailed to all members of the organization and to some libraries.  Also, a quarterly Newsletter and an occasional Update publication are provided to Society members.

Scholarships:  The Historical Society sponsors the Marks Scholarship, awarded annually to a graduating senior of New Bern High School, and renewable for four years of undergraduate study.

Member’s Benefits include free tours of the Attmore-Oliver House, the Journal, the Newsletter, invitations to educational programs, and invitations to social events (e.g., holiday party, spring or fall party, annual awards banquet).  Members also receive discounted tickets for the Spring Historic Homes and Gardens Tour.
